A practitioner of TaeKwonDo will live his or her life according to the following tenets, which are usually recited at the beginning of
every class.
COURTESY-We use good manners in all circumstances; for example, in actual practice, we always address USTA/ITA Instructors
and Black Belts as "sir" or "ma'am". We always bow: when we enter or exit the Do-Jan training floor, to Instructors when we meet
them, and when we begin or end a form or sparring match/drill. We never walk in front of a Black Belt or through a ring or the space
where someone is performing or practicing. We always let the higher rank do the first technique and set the pace and intensity of a
sparring match or drill. We sit properly, stand properly, and run (not walk) from one location to another. We always pay attention to
the Instructor, answer-up, and do exactly what he/she says immediately. We always answer-up with enthusiasm. We do not openly
correct, teach, or instruct a higher rank. We always line-up according to rank and never cut in line, push, shove, or compete for
position in line.
INTEGRITY-We are honest with ourselves and with others; for example, we do all 100 jumping jacks when assigned. We do not lie.
We do not cheat. We do not steal. We do not swear. We do not gossip. We do not spread falsehoods. We always do the best that
we can and always give 100%.
PERSEVERANCE-We overcome difficulties by never giving up; we improve in TaeKwonDo by faithfully attending class, practicing
on our own, and participating in as many USTA/ITA activities as is possible. We go on when we are tired. We continue in the face of
difficulty. We never say we "can't". We don't make excuses. We believe: "Pain is temporary; pride is permanent".
SELF-CONTROL-We control our own behavior; we don't let emotion or thoughtless reactions take over. We never get angry or
upset with ourselves or the Instructor, show frustration, grunt, groan, or make remarks. We push ourselves to exceed what we have
done before. We are the captain of our own ship of success!
INDOMITABLE SPIRIT-Our inner spirit cannot be broken; we always stand for what is right. We know that anything can be
accomplished or achieved if we truly want it to happen, and we are willing to give it enough time and effort. We "make it happen"!
