JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - The Jackson Police Department's major
crimes report for the second week in April shows violent crimes dropped slightly
compared to the same time last year. While that's a step in the right direction, everyone
could benefit from knowing a few moves in case you're ever the victim of an attack.
Classes at B and B Tae Kwon Do in south Jackson accommodate adults, children and
even toddlers.
Bernard Moore III and his sons started taking Tae Kwon Do classes led by Chief
Instructor and 4th Degree Black Belt Cecil Butler in August. Moore said the martial art,
which combines combat and self-defense, is great exercise and teaches his sons the
importance of discipline.
"They're not going to go out and pick fights they'll have the discipline to diffuse fights
and arguments," Moore said.
However, if danger comes their way, even the youngest student knows how to fight
back.
"We practice to a point where it just becomes muscle memory, so as soon as you're
put in that situation basically your body will take over and you will react," explained
Irvin Casely-Hayford, an Adult Assistant at B & B.
Women are often targets for physical attacks. Ladies, if someone comes from behind
you and grabs your shoulders to attack you, lift your arm to release their grip. You can
then face the target and kick him in the groin. Another move for an attack from behind
is to use your high heeled shoes. You can dig your shoes into the attackers leg and then
smash your attacker's foot.
"We concentrate on power, focus and determination to make sure people are prepared,"
said Casely-Hayford.
Moore said there's no excuse for anyone not to know how to protect him or herself.
"My 3-year-old is out here so [you can't say] well my child is too young or I'm too old
or I'm too lazy or I'm overweight, we take them all shapes and sizes," said Moore.
